Aberystwyth University projects aims for disabled people jobs boost

A new initiative led by Aberystwyth University aims to improve the recruitment, support, and retention of disabled and chronically ill people in workplaces across Wales. The project will bring together small and medium-sized businesses, public-sector organisations, and business groups to explore practical ways of creating more inclusive workplaces.

The initiative was launched in response to concerns that disabled people in Wales face higher risks of unemployment and are often unfairly viewed as lacking skills or ambition. Academics involved in the project stress that the real issue lies in structural barriers within employment systems rather than with disabled individuals themselves.

The project particularly focuses on supporting smaller businesses, which form the majority of employers in Wales but often lack dedicated HR or occupational health resources. Through networking events in north, mid, and south Wales, employers and organisations will discuss challenges, opportunities, and possible solutions for improving disability inclusion in employment.

The organisers also hope to establish a Wales-wide employer-led network to encourage inclusive hiring practices and long-term cultural change. Funded by the AberCollab programme, the initiative aims to create a future where disabled people are recognised, valued, and able to thrive in workplaces throughout Wales.
