Nina Sparks, a 35-year-old snowboarder from High Wycombe who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, is set to make history as the first woman to represent ParalympicsGB in para snowboarding at the Milano Cortina Winter Paralympics. Competing in the SB-LL2 category due to nerve damage in her right leg, Sparks will join four male teammates after four years of dedicated training. Having first learned to snowboard at the age of 13, she has steadily progressed in the sport and recently secured her first World Cup podium finish with a bronze medal in Steamboat, USA, boosting her confidence ahead of her Paralympic debut. Although she is proud to become a pioneer alongside teammates who have also made history for British para snowboarding, she remains focused on delivering a performance she can be proud of, with a medal being an exciting possibility. Sparks also hopes that the Games’ television coverage will introduce more people to para snowboarding and demonstrate the abilities of athletes with disabilities.
