The Muslim Ladies Council (MLC), led by its President Mrs. Mariam Goodur, held an award ceremony on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the Municipal Hall of the Municipality of Port Louis. The event celebrated notable achievements and aimed to inspire the community by recognizing outstanding contributions in education, disability rights, and academic excellence.

Central to the ceremony was the honouring of Hon. Kaviraj Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research. He received a distinguished award from the MLC in recognition of his recent accolade as a Fellow of the Commonwealth of Learning. This fellowship highlights his commitment to advancing education and research, setting a powerful example for others in the sector.

The occasion also coincided with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, adding a special significance to the event. In celebration, the MLC proudly recognized four remarkable individuals with disabilities for their exceptional accomplishments and advocacy. Among them was Mohammad Yaaseen Edoo, a noted disability rights activist who has earned international recognition as a winner of the Queen’s Young Leaders Award and as an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society. His work continues to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

This award ceremony by the Muslim Ladies Council not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the importance of education, inclusion, and empowerment. By honouring figures like Hon. Kaviraj Sukon and inspiring activists and scholars with disabilities, the MLC sent a strong message of hope and encouragement to the wider community.

Mohammad Yaaseen Edoo, besides being a Disability Rights Activist, he is also the editor of Handicap Universel. He delivered a thought-provoking speech on how the digital platform Handicap Universel publishes success stories of persons with disabilities and at the same time highlights different issues and discrimination such as inaccessibility of public transport other than metro express.

The event was a memorable occasion that brought together leaders, activists, and achievers, emphasizing the shared commitment to progress, equality, and recognition of outstanding contributions in society.
