In December 2023, the Equal Opportunity Cell for Persons with Disabilities (EOC-PwDs)of Panjab University, Chandigarh, had initiated a comprehensive accessibility audit that identified key areas for improvement, laying the groundwork for the effective utilisation of the SIPDA grant to implement targeted upgrades across the campus.

The Indian government has approved an initial grant of ₹5.22 crore from the requested ₹54 crore for Panjab University under the Scheme for Implementation of Persons with Disabilities Act (SIPDA). This funding aims to enhance accessibility infrastructure across the campus, ensuring a barrier-free environment for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). The improvements include constructing ramps, installing elevators, creating tactile pathways, and building accessible restrooms. This initiative follows a comprehensive accessibility audit conducted by the Equal Opportunity Cell for Persons with Disabilities (EOC-PwDs) in December 2023, which identified areas for improvement. The project aligns with the university’s goal of fostering an inclusive educational environment and adhering to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.
