Bristol City: Travel changes reworked to boost disability access

Bristol City Council is revising plans to pedestrianize parts of the city center after concerns were raised by disabled individuals. The original plan aimed to ban most vehicles from The Horsefair and restrict taxis and motorcycles on Union Street. Over 2,000 people participated in a consultation, with 59% supporting the pedestrianization of The Horsefair. However, disabled individuals expressed concerns about the loss of parking spaces and changes to bus routes.

To address these concerns, the council is working with the West of England Centre for Inclusive Living to add more disabled parking spaces, install level crossing points, and differentiate bike lanes from pedestrian paths using distinct surfaces. The council will conduct further consultations as part of the legal process to implement these changes, which will be funded by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

Additionally, other transport projects in Bristol have received support, including transforming Bedminster Bridge Roundabout into two bridges (60% support), creating a new park by Redcliffe roundabout (56% support), new crossings at Temple Way (66% support), and new bus lanes on Bond Street (58% support).
