Australia: Youngcare’s new CEO Clare Stewart is fighting for dignity for young people with disabilities

Clare Stewart, the new CEO of Youngcare, has a personal connection to the organization’s mission due to her own experience with disability. In 2000, at the age of 23, she was involved in a severe accident with a garbage truck, leaving her disabled and disfigured. This life-changing event has driven her passion for advocating for people with disabilities. Stewart previously worked with Youngcare, left to pursue a career in law, and later returned to join the board in 2017. She also served as the first female mayor of Noosa as from 2020.

As CEO of Youngcare, Stewart aims to empower young Australians with complex physical disabilities by providing them with choice, independence, and dignity. Youngcare offers services such as grants, specialist disability accommodation, and resources to navigate the disability sector. Despite receiving no government funding, the organization has made significant contributions to the lives of thousands by pioneering Specialist Disability Accommodation. Stewart is committed to continuing this work, advocating for a more inclusive world where people with disabilities have equal opportunities and freedom.
